April 8th, 2017.
It was the day that everything changed, the day that all we knew ceased to exist.
The day that begun the gas crisis.
Prices on gas had gone considerably up among the years, more and more people got their own cars. More people needed to use it to run their cars, run certain home appliances. Basically they needed it to run their lives. That’s why it was such a financial downfall when gas could not be found in the places it used to. Places had to go out of business, people had to either find a different transportation to their jobs, or quit. Everyone was sure this was the thing that was going to skyrocket them back to the earlier days of civilization.
That was, until an old man found their salvation.
It was an underground vein of different types of rocks that could be burned for a short time, into a gas-like substance that would move their cars. It instantly skyrocketed him, his family and the twelve other men who had been working on this 'project' into fame and fortune. This is what really begun the craze for money.
Certain people had more than enough money to support a city, others had barely enough to feed their children.

Old Mr. Greye and his wife were not cruel people, and they did not flaunt their money. Instead they rather help those less fortunate by setting up a sanctuary in their home. They would exchange food, clothing and shelter for a little bit of work around their home, things that the Greyes could not do so easily anymore.
However, the other families that had gotten rich from the rocks thought of this more as a chance to take advantage of the unfortunate. They thought of it more as an opportunity to gain slaves. They too 'set up a sanctuary' in their homes, and they were nice about it. They too gave food, clothing and shelter in exchange for some work.
But, when both Greyes fell ill, everything changed in a heartbeat.
The other men started digging up as much of the 'special rock' that they could find until it was gone. This made them richer, and richer, until the money got to them. They banned the use of cars so no-one would see they had ran out of rock to sell, and they began bribing officials in the city to destroy the slavery ban. Once this was done, the slaves and servants were assigned to homes, and sold when the owners wished. Families were split up, and rights of the people were taken away.
With each generation of the masters that passed, the slaves were treated more and more brutally. Eventually, the masters didn't care whether or not what they were doing was sinful. It became an everyday part of life that they had grown-up in.

It is now the year 2843, and even more has changed.
The descendants of the original twelve families have made many more changes. Prostitution has become legal, cigarettes and alcohol are now illegal, and it seems only the slaves are able to become pregnant. The only forms of long distance transportation are electric bullet trains. There are no more concrete or asphalt roads, they are all dirt and gravel, and all local transportation is by foot, horses, or carriages. All of the buildings have running water and electricity.
What the masters and mistresses do not know is with each passing day their bank accounts dry up a little. It starts off slowly and not many detect it, but will these Masters and Mistress' still have enough money to even support themselves in the next year, two years, five years, ten?
Welcome to a Life in Chains, where the Old West meets the 20s.
